As you explore our help center, you will find mentions of certain types of administrative permissions that are required to perform some actions in the application.
Note: You can find a complete list of Microsoft 365 admin roles here.
Index
- Global admin (Microsoft 365)
- SharePoint admin (Microsoft 365)
- Site collection admin (SharePoint on premises and Microsoft 365)
- Farm admin (SharePoint on premises)
Global admin (Microsoft 365)
In ShareGate Desktop, Global admin permissions allow you to:
- Connect to your Microsoft 365 SharePoint admin center.
- Access all your site collections.
- Access all your OneDrives.
- Add/remove site collection administrators.
- Migration of multiple site collections (Requires a connection to your admin center).
- Grant consent of the Azure ShareGate Desktop app to all users.
Note: Even if you are using a Global admin account, you will not be able to see Microsoft 365 Groups in the application without granting consent of the Azure ShareGate Desktop app to all users.
SharePoint admin (Microsoft 365)
SharePoint admin permissions will allow you to perform the same actions as a global admin once a global admin grants consent of the Azure ShareGate Desktop app to all users.
Without consent, you will experience some limitations when managing Microsoft 365 groups in ShareGate Desktop.
Site collection admin (SharePoint on premises and Microsoft 365)
Even if you have SharePoint admin or Global admin permissions, Site Collection admin permissions are required as well when running most operations in ShareGate Desktop.
When you run a structure migration (lists, libraries, sites, etc.), you should have site collection admin permissions on the source and destination.
Without the site collection admin permissions, many interactions with the SharePoint APIs will fail, causing unpredictable issues.
If you are using a Global Admin or SharePoint Admin account, you can enable Auto-assign as administrator in your ShareGate Desktop settings, this will add you as a site collection admin automatically.
Notes:
- Site collection admin is a different role than Site Owner.
- On premises, you don't need site collection admin on your site collections if you have Full Control on the web application.
- If you are using SharePoint 2003, you must also have Site Owner permissions.
Farm admin (SharePoint on premises)
In ShareGate Desktop, Farm admin permissions allow you to:
- Connect to your SharePoint central admin.
- Access all your site collections.
- Access all your MySites.
- Access all your OneDrives for Business.
- Add/remove site collection admins.
- Migration of multiple site collections (Requires a connection to your central administration).
