Remove users that no longer exist or who are inaccessible in a target location.
Once the action is completed, the orphaned user will be removed from the User Information List and will no longer have any permissions in the target SharePoint environment. The Clean Orphaned Users action will not remove the assigned metadata within your lists and library. For example, if an orphaned user is the creator of a library, their name will still show as the creator after running this action.

Cleaning these users is important because they may have site permissions or documents marked as being authored by them.
Note: External users can be temporarily flagged as orphaned users when they are created due to a short time lapse between Azure Active Directory and SharePoint that prevents synchronization.
- You have connected to an environment as a Global Administrator or SharePoint Administrator.
- If you want to clean all Orphaned Users, we highly recommend you run a report to detect Orphaned Users (report will be found in the menu, under Security) on your target before running a Clean Orphaned Users action. This ensures that ShareGate Desktop properly detects the Orphaned Users before the Clean action is run. Alternatively, you can select Specific Users on step 4 (in the How-To below), which automatically runs the report and allows you see the Orphaned Users in your target. You can then select them all, and proceed as per the instructions.
- Select the item you would like to perform the action on from the Explorer.
- Click Clean Orphaned Users from the quick actions panel.
- Select All Orphaned Users or Specific Users (allows you to type the name of the user to filter the results, or find them on a list) from the drop down.
- Click (you can also Schedule this action).
- The task will now run.
- In the case that there are warnings or errors, they will be displayed with details in separate tabs near Results.
