The Server Extension is an optional component that is installed on your SharePoint server to provide you with additional functionality that preserves certain values or features when running a migration.
Note: The server extension is not required in Office 365, but it is highly recommended to install it in your source or destination if you're doing any kind of migration to or from an on-premise SharePoint server. This will help package your information and can even reduce the strain on Office 365, thus reducing the potential for throttling.
Please ensure the following before installing the Server Extension:
- Administrative rights on your SharePoint server. The Server Extension must be installed on all the web front-end servers if you have more than one.
- SharePoint server .NET framework 3.5 or higher.
- Validate that you need to preserve one of the values on this list, and/or that you are running a migration from SharePoint 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 with Insane Mode.
- Read and understand the security considerations associated to the Server Extension.
